This certificate allows a pilot to operate an aircraft for personal and recreational purpose.  This is the basic certificate and can be used on VFR days with minimal additional training after obtained.  It is necessary to be a Private Pilot to obtain other higher class certificates.

Private Pilot

License Requirements:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language
  • Obtain at least a current third-class medical certificate
  • Receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight time including training and solo flight
  • Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test

Commercial Pilot

License Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a private pilot certificate
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language
  • Obtain at least a current second-class medical certificate
  • Have logged at least 250 hours
  • Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test

This certificate allows a pilot to operate an aircraft for professional, personal and recreational purposes for compensation. This is the basic Commercial certificate and can be used on VFR days with minimal additional training after obtained. To get full use from the certificate an IFR (instrument privileges) “add-on” would be needed.  It is necessary to be a Commercial Pilot to be a professional pilot like an airline pilot, corporate pilot, cargo pilot, flight instructor or to tow banners for compensation.

This certificate allows a pilot to operate an aircraft for professional, personal and recreational purposes for compensation. This is the most advanced certificate and can be used on VFR/IFR days with annual training recurring. To get full use from the certificate a pilot would be employed by a company that operates larger aircraft. An ATP rating is required to fly as a captain for the airlines or as a corporate captain for hire.

Air Transport Pilot

License Requirements:

  • Be at least 23 years of age
  • Hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating
  • Be of good moral character
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language
  • Obtain at least a current first-class medical certificate
  • Have logged at least 1500 hours
  • Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test
